Friendship Haven administrator receives quality award
November 14, 2013
DES MOINES—Jennifer Crimmins, Vice President of Health Center Operations, Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge, received the Leading Edge Care and Services Award from LeadingAge Iowa during the long-term care association’s awards banquet.
The award is given to a LeadingAge Iowa member demonstrating creative new programs or services to dramatically benefit residents.
Under the leadership of Jennifer Crimmins, Vice President of Health Center Operations, the Health Center team was able to lead though change in order to have a significant impact on the daily lives of residents who call Friendship Haven home.
While residents recently moved into a new building with all private rooms and private baths, the real change is what’s going on inside the building. Friendship Haven has been transformed from an institutional geriatric hospital-like setting to "home." This was all possible due to leadership. Several significant changes have occurred, all under the umbrella of making residents’ lives better.
The most significant change is Friendship Haven’s commitment to eliminating personal alarms for residents. As of January 1, 2013 alarms were no longer implemented as interventions following a fall. Friendship Haven researched its own history and national trends of falls and alarm elimination. Case studies and fall trends before and after reducing/eliminating alarms showed that falls decreased with alarm elimination. Friendship Haven is promoting a higher quality of life for health center residents setting the standard for innovation in the industry.
Another breakthrough in service delivery – medications and a complete electronic health record system with laptops in every resident room gives the caregivers the ability to spend more time with residents. Caregivers also use individualized IPods to be alerted for call lights to respond quickly to resident needs.
Friendship Haven is a member of LeadingAge Iowa, the premiere association for not-for-profit, senior services providers.
